An ability to imagine something new, to produce something out of unusual ideas, to accept innovations in work, to set a different example, to let the ideas arrange themselves, to modify ideas, and bring them into action is creativity. We all want to be creative, whether in professional as well as daily life, have only to maintain household you have to be creative. Most people don’t like a boring method of doing something and they feel like there is a need for creativity.

Is Creativity a God-gifted trait or it can be learned?

It is commonly believed that creativity is a talent and, not every single person can acquire it. Some people are genius while some aren’t. The same goes for creativity. But that doesn’t mean we can’t learn to be creative. Nowadays, more and more people believe it is a nurtured talent. I believe we all are creative in one way or another but this trait is hidden somewhere. Let us look at a mother of a fussy child who continually does something to calm her child, she sometimes uses methods that aren’t usually used by every single mother, she invents such stories which are her own. That’s is the creativity in that household mom. We all are creative in a similar fashion, all we need to do is to nurture our habits and thinking.

Stages of creative process

Nobody can claim to know the actual process of the creative thinking because such thoughts are the product of harmony between conscious and unconscious mind. Graham’s Wallas book The Art of Thought has one of the first complete models of the creative process. The model involves four stages,
preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification/implementation.

It involves gathering information by the research of the problem/project and creative thinking for a better understanding of the problem/project at hand.

Stage in which the unconscious mind thinks about random stuff. We are not mindful of whatever thoughts are being entertained. This stage deals with all kinds of ideas.

The stage in which flash of illumination solves worries. But all people don’t get ideas at the spur of the moment. Show persistence and eventually, you’d have happy ideas.

This very stage includes polishing and analyzing ideas got in the illumination stage. Furthermore, checking its pros and cons and originality.

There is no single road leading to the creative destination, sometimes you have to work on all of roads to some extent to determine which of these works for you.

Let’s discuss the sources of creative thinking.

  1. Improve your imagination

“Imagination is everything. It’s the preview of life’s coming attractions.”
~Albert Einstein

All the creative projects were once the imagination of a genius mind. Improve your imagination and try to imagine as much as you can. Whenever you entertain an idea you are moving in some direction or at least you aren’t stuck somewhere. A creative mind is usually more open to new and unusual ideas. The more you think the more you’d be able to think better.

2. Observations

“One must always be aware, to notice - even though the cost of noticing is to become responsible.”

~Thylias Moss

Observation is the ability to use all the senses to analyze and study what is around us. Along with imagination, better observation skills can help you achieve much more. Critical thinking can help to arrange your thoughts and dump those which matter less. Attention to every single detail can save your time and thus makes you more productive. Taking notes on everything is the best way to remain mindful so keep an observation journal and it will make you more creative.

3. Reading more books

“Some books leave us free and some make us free.”
~Ralph Waldo Emerson

Reading stimulates our imaginations and helps us to polish our raw thoughts. It’s the activity that is best meant for escapism. The reading tells us about a new world about which we knew little or nothing. Now we want to have a new world of our own as well and it literary opens our minds and helps us to entertain thoughts efficiently. It helps the right side of the human brain, which is thought to be used for creating new idea.

So it reduces our stress and by thinking about what is going to happen on next pages we are free to create something in mind.

4. Keep a commonplace notebook

To write ideas, observations, and plans associated with them you need to write more. Writing is one of the best self-help ways to boost your creativity skills and to refine your ideas and thoughts. So to improve your writing commonplace journal is a must. Human memory is weaker, ink is stronger.

5. To Mediate

Oxford dictionary defines it as,
focus one’s mind for some time with the aid of chanting, for religious or religious purposes, or as a method of relaxation.’
Mindfulness helps us to have rational and divergent thinking and also it improves our attention to register small thoughts and changes in our surroundings. It helps in relaxation and a relaxed mind can bring more helpful ideas.

6. Thinking about random stuff more often

The more you think, the more options you’d have and you’d be surprised by how the ideas found their way in your mind. Genius ideas don’t come overnight. It takes a long time to have your way in creativity.

7. Fixing a time for creative thinking

“We are what we repeatedly do.”

Schedule to think critically and to analyze the matters. To anticipate what might happen, you need to think about the odds of every event. Find your productive time and work on ideas at that time.

8. Don’t bother about perfection

“Don’t Get it right, just get it written”
~James Thurber

Perfection doesn’t come right away. A graphic designer can’t come with a dramatic design in seconds, no matter how much talent and creative skills he/she has. Don’t bother about creating the right piece. Pay heed to creation for the time being. With practice you can achieve perfection.

9. Rationality in thinking

Rationality will broaden your intellect. Being neutral and analyzing every aspect can help to save time as well as stamina. Try to be as objective while thinking and researching as possible and come up with ideas on both positive and negative aspects of whatever thoughts you are entertaining.

10. Give yourself deadlines for creative projects

What would happen if we were allowed to finish a project whenever we’d like? We would end up not doing that project at all. So, it is very important to set small goals and have them at some date. If you fail to achieve the goal at that date, extend the date for some more time.

11. Brainstorming

A creative way to have suggestions and ideas on projects or problems. No matter where we start, sometimes it helps to find help from someone. The more you brainstorm, the better direction your thoughts can take.

12. Never underestimate the power of hard work

Creativity has its place but hard work can help you to succeed in the long run. Persistence always pays off. Even a God-gifted creative person has miles to go before the journey ends.

13. Relaxation and Recreation

Relaxation and doing exercise always has a tremendous effect on human thinking. It’s better to have a proper time for having some rest because sometimes ideas jump from unconscious to conscious mind during relaxing.

“The process of creative activity display several striking features. One of the most frequent is the occurrence of flashes of insight outside the hours of regular work, during periods of physical activity or at odd moments of reverie or relaxation when the mind is day dreaming.”
Lancelot Whyte in Explanation

Creative journey is all we need in this competitive world. All of these sources can work to boost creative skills when used. In the world of imagination, you have to find your way by yourself.
